Representatives of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Professor of Political Science, Chairman of the Veterans Council of the Kyiv National University Fedir Mykhailovych Kyryliuk and Postgraduate Student of the Department of Political Science, President of the First International Development Fund of Ukraine Mykola Volkivsky took part in the Athens Democracy Forum. September 29 to October 3, 2021 in the capital of the Hellenic Republic.

This year’s theme of the Forum was the fight against COVID-19. The world regains some hope for improvement and normalization of life, but other powerful challenges remain – climate change, social inequality, polarized policies, weakened economies and difficult relations in the world of technology.

The impressive speed with which Covid-19 vaccines have been developed and the resilience of democratic institutions in the United States and elsewhere demonstrate what people can achieve in times of crisis. During the discussions at the Forum, it was noted that the latter thesis is an irrefutable confirmation of the victory of democracy over authoritarianism, from which nations still suffer today.

The practice gained gives hope that the same determination can be applied to the relentless challenges that await humanity in the future. This is the mission of the Athens Democratic Forum, which stressed that democracy can win, but only if it is really implemented, protected, renewed, and the citizens themselves believe in it.

For the development of democracy in the regions and the world as a whole, it is necessary to establish partnerships between the public, private and public sectors, involve as many citizens as possible in the processes and make the activities of these institutions transparent, clear and understandable.

All meetings of the Forum – panel discussions, keynote speeches, discussions and interactive seminars focused on the dual missions of the Foundation: democracy and culture. The forum was held under the patronage of the President of the Hellenic Republic, Mrs. Catherine Sakellaropoulou.

After the panel discussion, Professor FM Kyryliuk and graduate student MA Volkivsky invited Professor of the University of Athens Lucas Tsukalis and Professor of Political Science Dimitris Soturopoulos to visit our university and give lectures to students.
